Monopoly Movie Poster

This is a passion project of mine. I was challenged not only to create a film poster based on a board game, but the plot as well. There were many options to choose from, but I decided to pick “Monopoly” as my choice. I researched the rules of the game to gather a concept for my design, and I began to think about how a point of view from the board’s perspective would present itself on a film poster.

When drafting the film’s plot, I found that a gambling narrative was the most fitting for a board game-based movie. In the early stages of designing this poster, I made a poor attempt with Photoshop to achieve my desired impression. I was not as experienced with Photoshop as I am today, so I made the creative decision to use the Photoshop Collage to help draw the poster on Illustrator. It was also during this time that I was inspired by a poster designer James Stewart, whose works were grounded in minimalism. I adopted the idea of curating with a few colors and basic shapes to make the poster appear simplified, but detailed enough for viewers to tell what it is. I added subtle details that replicated the Monopoly board game which had Mr. Monopoly’s signature hat and mustache on the title, small houses on the poker table, and more. I implemented the rolling dice to create a 3D illusion on a two-dimensional platform. I utilized the font’s size, alignment, kerning, leading, and colors to compliment the film poster. As a joke, I made all but one name on the poster fake for the producers of the movie, but in my mind, Danny DeVito would be the perfect candidate to portray Mr. Monopoly if there was a movie.
